Mom of three, Ex Video game exec, and your squadmate in screentime. Let’s tackle the challenge of screentime together.

In 2006, I left an amazing high flying career in the video game industry. I quit my job as the Chief Operating Officer of Electronic Arts, Los Angeles where I had the privilege to work with some of the most talented and gifted artists and game makers in the world. When I “retired,” I was 39 weeks pregnant with my first child, I wanted to fully focus on the next chapter of my life… being a mom.

I was pumped up and psyched to be a stay at home mom. From Super Nanny to Spock, I read and consumed everything to feed my over anxious mommy instincts. When the iPhone was released in 2007, this portable weapon of mass distraction seemed like candy in a baby’s hands. So as my babies grew, it was all about limits and control. As a game-maker, I felt like I used to be a drug dealer. So, I too did the β€œJust say no!”

I came under the realisation that I can’t fight this tide, personally and as the caregiver, mentor, and guide for my children. Technology is a language for our kids. And screentime is the medium. I realised I was not properly preparing them for their new reality.

I am the Founder and President Infinite Screentime, a movement dedicated to dispelling the negative connotations of screentime and building a community of coaches, educators, and child advocates that helps to raise the screen-smart kid. We don’t know what the future holds for our children, but we know that we need to raise screen-smart kids by setting unlimited access to technology

I love talking to people. Your stories about screen time are fascinating to me. It fuels my curiosity and puts my brain cells into overdrive. It feels like we are adventuring into uncharted territories together like frontiersman, figuring out the rules of the west. OK, maybe that is a little dramatic, but honestly I bring this tireless inquiry and passion to all of my events.

Arcadia and Infinite Screentime worked with our school PTA to host a dynamic session on discussing mindful screentime for our parent community.Β  Arcadia was a delight to work with from beginning to end, well-prepped, and delivered a meaningful and engaging session for our community.Β  We all learned a lot from her and would highly recommend working with her!

“Arcadia led a very useful session for parents and kids to hear each other out about how they see and feel about online gaming. I enjoyed hearing what other kids though and the questions they had for their parents. It was fun to exchange our concerns, needs and curiosity.Β  It also gave us a platform and a safe space to talk about how we each feel about gaming. It was also a relief to hear that most kids do care about how addictive online games can be. They just needed help and guidance! Arcadia has opened many doors for my 11yo and I to discuss how we can best approach tech-use as a family going forward. I would totally recommend Arcadia’s workshop to parents with kids who are into online games. It is such a constructive thing to do as a family.”

I enrolled in Arcadia’s β€œFornite is a F-Word” workshop on a friend’s recommendation because Fortnite was always a point of contention between my son and I.  Getting him to stop playing and do something else seemed to always end up in an argument.  The two hour workshop that my son and I shared together with Arcadia really opened up the dialogue not only about this particular video game but also on his general screentime use. I was reminded how I loved to play my own games when I was younger, and I started to see how this form of play had value and meaning for his childhood. Now, my son and I talk more openly and positively about his CHOICES in screentime, and as a result I see more healthy screentime habits. Thank you Arcadia!

I have to admit that technology is a bit overwhelming to me. Unlike a majority of my friends who have gone β€œdigital,” I still have a paper diary and enjoy my handwritten notes! It’s much easier for me to process information that way. So when my son asked for a smartphone for his birthday, I was torn. Although I am not super tech savvy, I wasn’t sure if it was too early for my 11-year old to start down that path of no return! I asked Arcadia for advice. First, she offered me the pros and cons to consider, and then designed a β€œplan” that would enable my son to start using a smartphone gradually, gaining access/unlocking apps over the course of several months while enforcing the idea that a phone is a privilege that comes with responsibility. So we did it. We bought him a phone. My son is, of course, thrilled! But I am excited for him too! We are building all of these positive new habits about how technology plays into our family values. I love Arcadia’s approach of letting the child drive the choices so that they can be more responsible screentime users. And best part is that I am learning more about technology too!
